Chapter 14

What was I thinking? Brandon chastised himself as Chloe walked away. The cowboy had never been happier to see his friend than he was at that moment. He had not planned on kissing Chloe. In fact, he didn’t want to until the very moment he began to lean into her. Or was she leaning into him? He was unclear on who was doing the leaning, but they were definitely too close for comfort.

Oblivious to his inner turmoil, Cove patted Brandon on the back. “Dude, that Chloe is one fine lady. Are you going to ask her out again?”

The question took Brandon aback. Did Cove notice the tension between them? Did he see that they’d almost kissed? He hoped Cove didn’t notice anything. “Why do you ask? Are you thinking about asking her out?” He wasn’t sure why he put that out there. The thought of Chloe and Cove going out actually got his dander up.

Out of the corner of his eye, Brandon watched Chloe walk around the tables with the completed gingerbread houses. He felt drawn to her, just like he did when they’d first met. When she fell, he worried she might be injured, but when he helped her up and held her for a moment too long in his arms that day, his heart had been lassoed by the pretty newcomer.

She had dirt on her cheek that day, and all he wanted to do was reach up and wipe it away, but he knew better than to touch a stranger’s face. Especially a pretty woman who was surrounded by an entire family of cowboys. If some strange man had touched his sister’s face before even formal introductions, he would have kicked his Wranglers—with him in them—into the next county.

Instead, he’d pulled his arms back too soon and she’d fallen again. Feeling like the cad he was, he helped her up again. But that time he made sure she was steady on her feet before letting go. They had never discussed that day, but he knew she was embarrassed.

Thinking about their first meeting had his heart beating fast and his breathing coming hard.

“Hey, Brandon. Did you hear me?” Cove backhanded him on the chest.

Brandon took a step back and rubbed his chest. “Oh, sorry. I guess I was thinking about something else.”

Cove smiled and looked at where his friend was staring. “Don’tcha mean someone else?” He chuckled and shook his head. “I don’t think I’ll be asking that pretty cowgirl out any time soon. But I do think you need to, my friend.”

A frown stole over Brandon’s face as he turned his attention back to his friend. “Cove, until you get your love life in order why don’t you keep your opinions to yourself?”

Sputtering, Cove responded, “I…don…don’t know what you’re saying.”

Brandon smirked. “Oh, I think you do.” He looked pointedly at Lottie and nodded his head in her direction.

“So, how’s your ma doing?” Even though Cove had changed the subject, Brandon knew he’d gotten to his friend.

“She has her good days and her bad days.
